Grok Imagine publishes a ladder and names a default
The docs publish 1080p, 720p and 480p for the resolution parameter and state that 480p is the default. Most pages in this column publish a ladder without saying where a request lands if nobody chooses, and where a default is named it is rarely the bottom rung. As of 2026-09-22.
| Property | What the page states | Effect on an unspecified request |
|---|---|---|
| Ladder | 1080p, 720p and 480p | Three values to choose between |
| Default | 480p | A request that omits the parameter comes back at the bottom rung |
| Aspect ratio default | 16:9 | The shape also has a stated starting value |
Inclusion rule. Parameter values this page documents for resolution and shape, including the defaults it names. A value offered in a user interface but absent from the parameter list is not recorded. Order. The ladder, then the defaults that sit inside it.
1A named default is a specification, not a detail
An unspecified parameter is still a parameter. Where the page names the value a request falls back to, the fallback becomes checkable; where it does not, a pipeline that forgets the field produces output nobody can predict from the documentation.
This row names two: the bottom resolution rung and sixteen by nine for shape. Both are the cautious choices, which is what a default should be, and both mean an incomplete request returns something usable rather than something expensive.
2480p at the bottom sits against a published pixel floor
The surface in this register that publishes minimum dimensions accepts vertical ads from 540x960 upward. A 480p rung is a short-side figure and a 480p vertical frame is 480 pixels wide, which sits just under that floor, so the cheapest rung and the vertical minimum are close enough that the tier choice is a real one rather than a formality.
On most rows here the cheapest rung clears every published floor comfortably and the resolution column stops mattering. This is one of the few where a plan has to look at the number rather than assume it.
3Three rungs with no length attached to any of them
Neither the ladder nor the default is tied to the duration range on this page. One to fifteen seconds is available at each rung, which separates this row from the two entries that make their longest run conditional on a tier.
That independence is what makes a cheap draft useful here. A composition can be settled at 480p at its final length and re-requested at 1080p without anything about the timing changing, which is not true on the rows where the columns are coupled.
